Over 65% of agricultural production in Australia is dependent on European honey bee pollination, with 35 industries dependent on it. The demand for pollination in Australia is ever growing, especially with the introduction of Varroa mite. Historically the vital role of European honeybees has not been widely recognised or valued, unfortunately as a result of Varroa mite we expect to see the large population of wild European honeybees in Australia begin to dwindle over the coming years. This reduction in wild population will further more increase the demand for paid pollination services from managed European honeybees in Australia.
